About La Luz Scholarship
The La Luz Scholarship Foundation was founded by Fabio Peña, an Albers MBA student who is a first-generation student. Furthermore, the La Luz scholarship is primarily intended for first-generation students regardless of immigration status, which means that immigrants from all over the world are eligible.
You might be wondering “What is a First-gen student”? a first-generation college student is a student whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree. Therefore, being a first gen student means you are the first in your immediate family to attend college.
The La Luz Foundation believes that first-generation students face special challenges such as getting through complicated college admissions, adapting to the unfamiliar campus environment, and applying for scholarships.
According to the Pew Research center, 70% of adults between the ages of 22 to 59 have at least one parent with a bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, the remaining 26% which are first-gen students have not earned a bachelor’s degree compared to the 70%.
La Luz Foundation sees getting higher education as a way to change individuals, families, and communities.
